Human bias and inconsistent criteria lead to skewed ratings. Everything clusters between 6-8 out of 10. A "good" movie gets an 8-9 and a "bad" one gets a 5-6. It's unavoidable but also misleading.
I built a rank-based rating system using percentiles. Top 10% movies get a 10, next 10% get a 9, and so on. This way, a 5/10 actually means average and a 8/10 means genuinely good. Of course, this system assumes that films are objectively comparable.
